A red kite

Out walking on July 4th I saw a kite (the bird!)just above the car park to the old rifle range in Dodds Lane. It was very low and obviously hovering over something in the adjacent field. This is the second time I have seen one here. Interestingly this time a sparrow hawk tried to chase it off ... but failed.

This is probably a red kite, which has spread from the Chilterns in Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire to Hertfordshire. It's easily recognisable by its huge wingspan (nearly two metres) and distinctive markings. I also saw one (probably the same one) circling over Highfield the other day. If it comes any nearer I will try to take a photo. Though birds of prey red kites prefer carrion, however according to other sightings reported in the Gazette they are not averse to the odd pigeon! - Ed.

Can I say how nice 'the cottages' look since their major renovation. It's always good to get the scaffolding down and to see them back to their former glory. Well done Mervyn.

What a lovely occasion!
First of all I'd like to say what a lovely event the safari supper was and how I enjoyed meeting everybody and being able to put names to faces.  Once again thank you so much to Chris and Alice for organising the safari supper and for the lovely starter, to Laurie & Charlie for a lovely Boeuf Bourgignon and to Chris and Richard for the lovely welcome, all the wine and all the puddings!
Warm wishes to all

Thank you PERA
Just a little note of thanks, for all the hard work that has gone into the PE website , thank you also to the PERA for the hard work that goes into looking after the interest of the village. This is the first time Peter and I have browsed the website. How lucky are we that people care. Thank you.

More travellers on our doorstep?
Not sure if you will have seen the notices that have appeared along PE Rd today (23/7) - it would seem there are plans afoot to put 2 new sites for travellers & gypsy's at Woodhall Farm and Grovehill. Consultation meeting scheduled for July 30th, although looking at the website it looks as if the opportunity to consult finished at the end of Dec'08. Traffic concern
Dear Editor
I have concerns about the speed of the traffic that comes trough PE. I walk my dog frequently through the village and have noticed we are used as a "rat run" for vehicles coming off the Leighton Buzzard road . The speed with which they drive through is at times quite frightening. Is there any way we could deter these drivers from using PE as a short-cut i.e more speed humps (ones that actually slow the traffic),speed cameras, or at the very least a speed limit sign! This has concerned me for a while now. Thanks for your time.

We thought you'd like to see a pretty frosty morning view from our window at number 58.

Good luck with Peraonline - we will keep checking in on it.  Would love to see more photos.  (My granddaughter won the Halloween fancy dress 3 years running, but didn't win last year - I'd love to see the photos if they exist)

Regards

Lynn and Shaun Mitchell

Thanks for your nice photo.  Sorry, I don't have any photos of past Halloween winners, but better luck this year! - Ed.
